Northern Ireland equal marriage activists call out the UK government

Northern Irish Secretary Karen Bradley met with the local LGBT+ campaigners who are fighting to break the impasse that leaves Northern Ireland behind the rest of the UK from the point of view of LGBT rights as the country still does not approve marriage equality because of the local government collapse and the refusal of the UK government to intervene. Representatives of the Love Equality coalition condemned the government’s failure to act after the meeting with Bradley and junior Northern Ireland minister Lord Duncan of Springbank. Cara McCann, Director of HereNI, expressed disappointment with the results of the meeting, she noted that Ms Bradley did not tell them something they would not have heard before and she did not show that she treated them equally to the rest of the NI population. “Sadly, the Secretary of State, far from upholding the rights of LGBT people in Northern Ireland, seems content for us to live as second-class citizens within the UK,” the campaigner noted.
