Senator Joe Manchin is the only Democrat who is against LGBT Equality Act

44 out of 45 Democratic senators have backed a proposed LGBT+ rights law, but Senator Joe Manchin from West Virginia has been a vocal opponent of it. In a statement, Manchin said he supports outlawing homophobic discrimination but has doubts about the legal protection of transgender rights. He said that after consulting with the officials in his state he started to hesitate whether the document the way it was by then could provide “sufficient guidance to the local officials who will be responsible for implementing it, particularly with respect to students transitioning between genders in public schools.” Manchin said he would “continue working with the sponsors of the bill to build broad bipartisan support and find a viable path forward for these critical protections so that I can vote in support of this bill.” West Virginia is one of 30 US states that does not legally protect LGBT population from being discriminated against.
