A dozen US-based Christian groups have donated millions in the past decade to fund anti-LGBT policies in European countries. An investigation by OpenDemocracy into the financial accounts of 12 ultra-conservative organizations revealed that they have spent as much as $51 million dollars towards the activities of anti-LGBT and anti-abortion campaigns abroad. Some of these groups have direct links to President Donald Trump’s administration. The Alliance Defending Freedom and Focus on the Family have both received donations from Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos and her family, as ProPublica reported almost two years ago, but it cannot be either confirmed or denied because both groups have anonymity policy for donors as an issue of personal safety. The investigation found the ADF tripled its annual spending in Europe between 2012 and 2016, to more than $2.6 million a year. The ADF has offices in several European cities, including Brussels and Strasburg, which host the European Parliament. They also rumored to have stood behind the referendum against same-sex marriages in Romania.
