Woman gives birth to her own grandchild to help gay son and his husband

Cecile Reynek Eledge, 61, delivered Uma Louise Dougherty-Eledge on March 25 at the Nebraska Medical Center, CNN reports. The child was conceived through in vitro fertilisation, using sperm from Cecile’s son Matthew Eledge and eggs from his husband Elliot Dougherty’s 26-year-old sister Lea Yribe, as both men wanted a child to be genetically related to them, though they knew what a challenge it may be for a same-sex couple. “I had a lot of people in college say they would (carry and deliver a child), but when push comes to shove, that’s a huge commitment,” Eledge said, but his mom has always been there for him and he knew she was the only person he could count on no matter what. Elledge, a teacher, expressed his gratitude for his mother and sister-in-law, saying: “More than anything, we feel lucky to have women selfless enough to do this.” Matthew’s mum told USA Today that she was joking when she offered to be her son and husband’s gestational surrogate, but when the medical tests showed that she was able to do it, she did not take a step back
