UK foreign office minister Mark Field has suggested the Sultan of Brunei imposed death penalty for homosexuality because he got a little more devout with time. Mark Field dismissed MPs’ calls for Brunei to be suspended from the Commonwealth, adding that the row over the Sharia law misleads people about Brunei. In the eyes of Mr. Field this country is a “friendly and generous place” and the leader of it had been a good friend of his for many years and he still hopes to have a constructive dialogue with him about this issue, as even though he likes Brunei and i9ts sultan, he realizes how horrific the newly-enacted law is. “I very much agree with the sentiment of the House that the imposition of a sharia penal code is a backward step as far as Brunei is concerned, but progress is being made elsewhere and we will continue to work within the broad international community and the Commonwealth to ensure that countries come on board. The best way to do that, rather than threatening to kick countries out of the Commonwealth, is to try to hold them close and recognize the strong connections,” he finished the speech
