Empire weds Jussie Smollett’s character

The latest episode of Empire, aired on April 24th and titled “Never Doubt I Love, sees Jussie Smollett’s character Jamal getting married to his boyfriend Kai. This is the first black gay couple to tie the knot on the mainstream primetime TV. And as it is a culmination of Jamal’s love story, it is believed that Jussie Smollett’s suspension from the show pending the investigation of the alleged homophobic and racist attack on him might be permanent. Speaking on Good Day New York, Empire creator Lee Daniels said that it was still up in the air whether Smollett would be allowed to return for the show’s sixth season, given the controversy and increased insurance premium now attached to the star and the showrunners are currently discussing this dilemma. But Smollett’s onscreen mom Taraji P Henson believes he will be back: “I talk to Jussie all the time, he’s doing well. Yeah, we’re all doing well, the show is doing well, we’re on hiatus right now, the writers are trying to figure out what the next season is going to look like; what our storyline is going to be.”
