Empire will return for a sixth season, but Jussie Smollett’s character Jamal Lyon won’t feature in it even though it was decided not to terminate his contract. Fox Entertainment announced on April 30 that the new season of the show is coming but without Smollett in it. “By mutual agreement, the studio has negotiated an extension to Jussie Smollett’s option for season six, but at this time there are no plans for the character of Jamal to return to Empire,” the studio said in a statement quoted in Reuters. They did not give any further explanation for such a decision being made. They only added that the fact that Jamal is absent in the first episodes of the new season does not mean that the watchers will never see him again – as the contract is prolonged, the future of Smollett’s character is in question.
