The actor, who identifies as straight, plays Elton John’s lover and manager John Reid in the biopic Rocketman, and his film partner Taron Egerton is straight too. Even though they both were criticized for it (not for being straight, for being cast n gay roles), Madden says that there is no issue. Or at least there should not be any issue as long as actors do their job well, and he and Egerton are trying their best, hoping that the watchers will see and appreciate it when the movie comes out. “It’s a really terrible route to go down if we start restricting people’s casting based on their personal lives. We have to focus more on diversity and having everyone represented, but I’m also a firm believer in the best actor for the part,” Madden said in the interview to The Guardian. The film follows John’s rise to fame through the 1970s and 80s with “fantasy musical” numbers, lavish visuals and suitably retro costumes. Sir Elton personally demanded not to erase his sexuality from the movie plot and the director ensured that it was not done.
