British queer people aged 50+ are at higher risk of having mental and physical health issues than their straight and cis compatriots, study finds. So, as a consequence LGBT elderly Brits are more likely to develop addictions to different kinds of illegal substances. The report from the International Longevity Centre suggested that it could be directly related to that fact that the elderly queer men and women were made to hide their sexuality for the majority of their lives because it was socially disapproved and even illegal. Older LGBT people were found more likely to use drugs, smoke and drink regularly, and their general level of satisfaction with life is usually much lower. On social and end of life care, the review found that staff often ignore or misread same-sex relationships, with older people “less able to avoid homophobia and transphobia in care settings.”
