Republican tries to rename Equality Act

An anti-LGBT Republican lawmaker is attempting to rename the Equality Act, which would provide protections against discrimination on the basis of sexuality and gender identity. As the bill heads through the House of Representatives, dozens of amendments have been proposed, many of which attempt to undermine its key point of protecting the LGBT Americans. Arizona Rep. Debbie Lesko wants to turn the bill upside down and call it “Forfeiting Women’s Rights Act.” The lawmaker submitted three other amendments, one of which would ban government officials from “removing a child from the custody of a parent solely on the basis of the parent’s otherwise lawful disputation of that child’s change in gender identity.” Another amendment tabled by Lesko states that this act may serve a basis to reconsidering abortion laws, though abortions are not mentioned or even hinted on in the bill .
