This legendary actress and singer has a status of a gay icon for a much longer period of time than this term is used in general vocabulary. In the famed 1953 musical Calamity Jane Day sings the song “Secret Love,” the lyrics of which state that love that lives secretly in people’s hearts deserves being set free. That is why this song has been known as a gay anthem. Day was also known for her relationship with gay actor Rock Hudson, who died from complications arising from AIDS in the 1980s. The pair starred opposite each other in classics such as Pillow Talk and Lover Come Back. In 2015 Mrs. Day shared that she still deeply missed her friend and colleague. n an interview with People, Day revealed that Hudson kept his promise to appear on her variety show in July 1985, even though it waqs clear that he could not live up until then.
