The director of upcoming romantic period drama Ammonite has released the first official image of the two main characters played by the ‘Titanic’ star and one of the most famous Irish actresses. Ammonite—which is directed and written by God’s Own Country‘s Francis Lee—will tell the story of real-life Victorian palaeontologist Mary Anning (Winslet), who forms a close bond with a woman named Charlotte (Ronan) and realizes that this bond goes far beyond friendship, so she tries to come in terms with this new feelings, though she understands that they will never be accepted by her surrounding. Lee also announced that Fiona Shaw (Killing Eve) has joined the cast, along with James McArdle, Gemma Jones and Alec Secareanu. Lee has revealed that he first came across the historical figure of Mary Anning when he was looking for a fossil for his boyfriend. Some people criticized that fact that the actress chosen to play a lesbian character is not a lesbian and Mary Anning’s relatives denied that she could have had a lesbian crush at all.
