Michael D. Cohen reveals that he was assigned as female at birth but always knew that it was a mistake and he was a man. 20 years ago he finished his transition and had never revealed before that he had been born with a female anatomy. “I identify as male, and I am proud that I have had a transgender experience — a transgender journey,” he told TIME, saying that trans-inclusive TV shows like Transparent and Pose inspired him to reveal his story to the public, because transgender lives are important and their experience should never be erased. “In my experience, I was born male,” Cohen said, “What my body said about it was irrelevant. No matter how hard I tried, it was not up for negotiation. Believe me, it would have been so convenient if I was actually a woman.” He said that he had never used the term ‘transgender’ towards himself before, but feels as a part of the trans community and is ready to support it furthermore.
