The President of Russia Vladimir Putin has hit back the claims of Sir Elton John about poor LGBT rights records in Russia. Writing on social media Sir Elton said, addressing to Putin: “I strongly disagree with your view that pursuing policies that embrace multicultural and sexual diversity are obsolete in our societies.” The Russian leader, in turn, said that gay people should be able to live as they wish. He ensured that he respected the LGBT community in general and Sir Elton in part, whom he calls a musical genius and a great performer. Sir Elton voiced his concerns over a Russian decision to censor scenes featuring gay sex and drug use from Rocketman. But the Russian president said the ban was aimed at protecting children from “propaganda.” He noted that the attitude to LGBT people in Russia was calm and unbiased, people are free to choose whom to love, but to Mr. Putin’s mind people should be mature enough to make such a choice.
