Trans kids suicide rates in the UK reached the scandalous level, charity warns

Transgender children’s charity Mermaids is calling on the government to allow trans people of all ages to self-identify their gender, insisting that it is literally a question of life and death for so many young people, especially children, who struggle to “fit in” when they realize that their actual gender is not corresponded with the sex assigned at birth. Staff and trustees of Mermaids, which has been supporting trans children and young people for almost 25 years, have written an open letter that also demands gender diversity training be made compulsory for the workers of social sphere, such as police officers, doctors, teachers etc. They also want it to be a legal requirement for the NHS, particularly GIDS – the gender identity clinic for under-18’s in London – to adopt an affirmative approach to healthcare for trans kids. The letter also points out that, while the overall number of deaths by suicide in the UK fell between 2017 and 2018, the number of under 19’s taking their own lives in the same period rose by 15 percent.
