RuPaul has rejected questioning over a lack of diversity on the production crew on RuPaul’s Drag Race when he won his 6th Emmy award. Essence writer Danielle Young challenged RuPaul later in the press room, noting that he was the only person of color in the crew of the show. “I’m curious about how you feel, especially as someone who represents so strongly for the LGBT+ community… Do you feel like it’s important for that to be represented behind the scenes as well?” Ru replied that of course, the diversity is important and it is present in the crew and among the contestants, the show is host by a black gay man who does drag, if it is not diversity, then what is? “When I grew up, I had to fight, like… I feel like I’m about to quote a movie right now… but it wasn’t easy,” he added. The journalist made it clear later on Twitter that this answer had not satisfied her at all.
