Singer Sam Smith was subjected to homophobic assault when they were just 19. It infused into their mind the idea that wearing makeup and feminine clothes is not safe. So they stopped doing it for many years. The singer told Out that 2019 is a special; year for them not because they transformed or changed somehow, but because they finally rediscovered whom they used to be and came in terms with it. Dressing in a masculine manner initially helped them to succeed in music even in those countries that did not acknowledge queer people, however, it damaged their mental health because they felt like living someone else’s life and they were unable to move on like that. Their current music might not be accepted by everyone, but it is honest, it is them, it brings them joy and they share this joy with those who are ready to accept it.
