As a string of clubs back Stonewall’s rainbow laces campaign to help tackle homophobia in the sport, Aston Villa FC unveiled their new club crest which features the iconic lion kitted out in the Pride flag. We are not even surprised that homophobes were not happy about it. AVFC released the redesign on the Facebook page, proudly displaying it as the club’s profile picture, and there were 18 thousand people who expressed anger about it, while there were much, much less of those who reacted positively. One Facebook user, marked as a ‘top fan’, proclaimed that they support the club, but not the beliefs it promotes. This is the second year that an AVFC Pride logo has attracted anger from fans, but last year’s edition saw just 800 angry reactions compared to 4,300 likes. Football fans kicked off on the Arsenal Twitter page too, accusing the club of supporting nonsense to win matches.
