New Zealand Defense Force (NZDF) has been awarded a Rainbow Tick for LGBT+ inclusion. This is the first military in the world to receive an accreditation of this kind. The Rainbow Tick accreditation measures whether an organization accepts and values LGBT+ people in the workplace, and the NZDF said the “intensive” assessment process took 13 months and 15 focus groups to understand the needs of their LGBT+ employees and to satisfy these needs as much as possible, being sure that have a welcoming, accepting and friendly environment provided for them. Rainbow Tick director Martin King said: “This is a significant milestone for an organization that has historically been perceived as very macho, and which many might perceive as not being safe and welcoming for LGBT+ people.” The military of New Zealand has previously been proclaimed the most LGBT-inclusive in 2014.
