David and his partner, who wish to remain anonymous, were spending their holiday in a Turkish hotel last year. A couple in the room next door to them was having a very loud sex. As they came to complain about it, the homophobic row sparked. David and his boyfriend were told by hotel guests that they were an “abomination against the Bible”. Moreover, when they alerted the hotel staff to the multiple incidents, they were allegedly told no action would be taken. David and his partner were pummeled with more homophobia the following morning. Ringing local law enforcement, authorities said that they could “not count spitting in someone’s face as assault”. Moreover, Turkish law formally protects LGBT people from being discriminated against, but gives a lot of space too redefining the concept of anti-LGBT discrimination.
