Basketball star Dwyane Wade is proud of his trans daughter

The NBA player, who has four children with his wife Gabrielle Union, spoke to Ellen DeGeneres about his 12-year-old elder child coming in terms with her gender identity and choosing a new name Zaya. He told Ellen that he and his wife have always been proud LGBT allied, but having a trans child means reviewing their attitude to this community from a different, personal and subjective perspective, realizing that there is so much they need to learn as it becomes a part of their everyday lives to protect trans people and to stand for their basic rights. “My wife reached out to everybody on the cast of Pose. We just tried to figure out as much information as we can, to make sure we give our child the best opportunity to be her best self,” he said recalling that day when their child told them she identifies as a girl and introduced her new name. “Once [she] came home and said, ‘Call me Zaya and I’m ready to take on this.’ I looked at her and said, ‘You are a leader. It’s our opportunity to allow you to be a voice.’ Right now it’s through us, because she’s 12 years old, but eventually it will be through her.”
