New York state park to carry Marsha P Johnson’s name

New York governor Andrew Cuomo has promised to rename the state park after the prominent transgender rights campaigner. Cuomo announced that East River State Park in Brooklyn would be renamed at the Human Rights Campaign greater New York gala one month ago. According to AP News, Cuomo said at the gala that New York is the state responsible for progressiveness of the whole country and he wants it to remain such, but the hate crime on the basis of race, religion, gender identity and sexuality, especially if some of these factors are combined, are the main obstacle which does not let New York State be as progressive as its citizens want it to be. “I’m proud to announce that East River State Park in Brooklyn will be named in honor of Marsha P Johnson, a pioneer of the LGBTQ rights movements,” he added later on Twitter, “New York unequivocally supports the rights of LGBTQ New Yorkers, now and always.”
