The country’s first-ever openly transgender mayor

Marie Cau (55) became the first transgender mayo and it made a French village Tilloy-lez-Marchiennes popular. Cay was elected unanimously on the 23rd of Mayalmost: there were 14 votes for and one null vote. The municipal elections with 550 voters were held in March. Cau was for environmental sustainability and aimed to build local economy. She explains that her sexuality was not important for people: “People did not elect me because I was or was not transgender, they elected a programme,” Cau added. Representatives of National Transgender Association (ANT) are sure that people became progressive and they vote only because individual matters, not gender identity. Cau is happy to be mayo. She is sure she can do her best for people. Moreover, she is not only mayor, but also qualified engineer, so she is about to combine her duties and business.
