According to the report from Variety, filmmaker Silvio Horta was found dead in Miami hotel room. Horta reached fame creating a famous ABC soap opera Ugly Betty, which had numerous remakes and adaptations in different countries of the world – from India to Germany, from Venezuela to Russia. The cause of the death is yet to be confirmed, but right now suicide is viewed as the main version. Ugly Betty, for with Horta was the show-runner and head writer, ran for four seasons on ABC from 2006 to 2010, and was itself adapted from the Colombian telenovela Yo Soy Betty, La Fea. America Ferrera played the lead character Betty Suarez, an unconventional New York fashion magazine employee. The cast also included Vanessa Williams as the magazine’s editor Wilhelmina Slater, and the show included several gay characters, which was marked by GLAAD Awards in 2007. America Ferrera was one of the first to express her condolences to Horta’s family, writing on social media that she is heartbroken and devastated. “I’m thinking of his family and loved ones who must be in so much pain right now- and of the whole Ugly Betty family who feel this loss so deeply,” she wrote.
