Free healthcare services in Pakistan are to be extended to include transgender population for the first time. The government is giving trans people a special health card that will give them access to an existing government health insurance scheme, which was introduced in 2015 to provide health cards for people beyond the limit of poverty. Although contrary to their cis compatriots, transgender Pakistani won’t be forced to have their daily income measured to gain access to the free healthcare program. Prime minister Imran Khan said that his government was “taking responsibility” for trans people, who are often discriminated against and harassed by the personnel of the hospitals as well as other patients when they apply for a medical help. The health ID cards giving access to the free healthcare scheme will be immediately available, but only to trans people who have registered as trans on their other identity documents.
