Republicans in Iowa are attempting to ban the flying of the transgender flag, after one politician said that flying that flag was no better than jihad, though he failed to explain how he understood the word ‘jihad’. The pink, blue and white trans flag was flown over the Capitol building in Des Moines on 20 November to mark International Transgender Day of Remembrance (TDOR). Skyler Wheeler, a state senator who represents Iowa’s 4th district, took issue with the trans flag being flown in Des Moines and expressed disappointment that he was not informed about this ‘Rainbow jihad’ in advance so that he could be able to prevent it.
Jihad is an Arabic word for striving and struggling, often misinterpreted in the Western world in the context of terror attacks of radical Islamists, because they indeed excuse the attacks on infidelities (non-Muslims) with jihad (struggle) to build Muslim society and to defend Islam in the society which is not fully Muslim yet. Many modern writers claim that the main meaning of Jihad is the internal spiritual struggle, and this is accepted by many Muslims. However there are so many references to Jihad as a military struggle in Islamic writings that it is incorrect to claim that the interpretation of Jihad as holy war is wrong, but it is not full and too narrow.
